Real Cabs vs. Two Notes Wall of Sound Sims
Since the Two Notes stuff is making some noise around the music gear world I figured I would give the sims a good solid shot.
I am using the Two Notes Wall of Sound plugin and a Rivera Rock Crusher as a load box, and comparing the same sound/amp settings to a real miked up cab.
For this demo I plugged my Gibson Les Paul Traditional w/ EMG Het set directly into a Peavey 6505+ and went to town. The Two Notes plugin is setup so that it is using a two cab/two mic setup with the SM57 and MD421 sims.
Here's the tones:
Two Notes Calif StdC 4x12 (Recto w/ V30s 4x12 sim)
Real Recto 4x12 Miked up
Two Notes Green Tri (4x12 with Greenbacks)
Real Marshall 1960a (w/ Greenbacks) miked up
Here's a video demo of all 4 in one:
I think the Two Notes sims are pretty good right out of the box. Much brighter than similar mic positions on a real cab so I did apply a little post EQ just to darken them a bit. I think with further tweaking they are a great alternative to a real miked up cab. Oh and as a bonus using a load box on the amp and going direct in you can record 100% silent if you wish.

Greenbacks!
Since I am pretty settled on Vintage 30s in my Recto cab I wanted to get something with a different flavor in my Marshall 1960a cab. It had a G12-T75 / V30 X pattern going on.
I always liked Greenbacks so I figured that this would be a good cab to throw a quad in...

Mesa Dual Rectifier Boosts
Used a Gibson Explorer with Bare Knuckle Pickups Black Dogs. The Recto was set on Ch. 3 Modern and is running through a Mesa Recto 4x12. The cab is miked up with a Shure SM57 and Sennheiser MD421.
Boosts -
Ibanez TS-9
MXR GT-OD
Protone Misha Sig
Boss SD-1
Boss Metal Zone (hehehe)
Fulltone OCD (v4)
MXR Classic OD (in ZW-44 mode)
Boss OD-3
Recording was done using the Recto model boosted with a TS 808 in Amplitube 3 - this is the tone that is in the intro part while I was playing.
My favorite was the Protone Misha pedal just because the controls seem to have a wider sweep so that you can really dial in some different tones right from the pedal. The TS-9, SD-1, and MXR pedals all sound great although the controls don't have as much versatility.
The Metal Zone was fun... instant brutality.
The OCD was good but there was something about the character of the pedal that I did not like - either the boost was not enough or too much, and in the room the low end didn't tighten up the way I like. The OD-3 was too saturated even at mid level/no gain and did not tighten up the low end in the least.

Explorer + New BKP Black Dogs = ?
My Gibson Explorer is a great guitar. It plays well, is well balanced, etc. The only thing that has bothered me off and on is the 496R/500T pickup combo. Not that they sounded bad (especially after some height adjustments)... I just was thinking how much better the guitar could sound with new 500k CTS pots, new pickups, etc.
After some searching/thinking/etc I settled on doing a complete rewire using CTS pots, an Orange Drop cap, and... new BKP Black Dog pickups.
The wiring went smooth considering my crappy soldering skills...
